Phaedrus is a Baltic 35 foot sailboat, built in 1985, and named after the narrator's alter-ego in Robert M. Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. That book had a profound impact on the ways in which I saw, understood, and cultivated quality in my life and career. The adventure I am undertaking now is an endeavor to apply those lessons and integrate them into the total experience of my life.
I am hoping to start a dialog that leads to being able to see into the notion that, when approached correctly, the life that we are living right now can be a spiritual path. To explore some of the twists and turns along my path I would like to include some of the lessons and insights that have come up for me in the preparation of a 35 foot sailboat as my "adventure machine" in choosing to live a life experience directly.
Developing a direct approach experience of life while hopefully learning to hold the societal role and my own ego a little more loosely. Exploring what it takes to challenge us to return to a front-and-center, up-close-and-personal experience of living this human life within the differing contexts of the roles we choose to play. In this space I want to chronicle my adventure, discuss philosophy, sailing, travel, and the general logistics of keeping up an old race boat turned adventure machine.
